What is Calcitonin

• A naturally occurring hormone. Calcitonin is important for the proper functioning of bone, stomach and intestines, and kidneys. This product is synthetic (man-made).
• Used to treat osteoporosis.

What to Discuss before Using

• Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have any nasal or sinus problems such as nasal deformities, a chronic infection, or nasal pain.
• This medication is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
• It is also not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Do not use it without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Dosage Method

• Use exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
• Assemble the pump according to the package directions.
• Allow the bottle you are going to use to reach room temperature.
• When the medication reaches room temperature, prime the pump by depressing it until a full spray is produced. Then, insert the spray tip into your nostril and depress the pump.
• Alternate nostrils daily.
• The pump only needs to be primed before the first dose from that bottle.
• Store the bottle in use at room temperature away from light and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after 30 days.
• Store unused bottles in the refrigerator.

Miss a dose: Problems?

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and use only your regular daily dose. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

Overdose?

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur. If you suspect that this medication has been ingested, call an emergency room or a poison control left.

Avoid During Treatment

Do not use other nasal medications at the same time as calcitonin nasal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Side effects

• If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop using this medication and seek emergency medical attention:
  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives)
  • severe nasal irritation
• Other, less serious side effect may be more likely to occur. Continue to use this medication and talk to your doctor if you experience:
  • runny nose
  • bleeding nose
  • nasal crusts
  • dry or red nose
  • itching
  • tenderness or an uncomfortable feeling in the nose
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs to avoid while undergoing treatment

• Do not use other nasal medications at the same time as calcitonin nasal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
• There are no other known interactions between this medication and other medicines; however, interactions may occur. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
